Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
