Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
